Last few months have gone well for the comedies. ‘Judwaa 2’, ‘Golmaal 3’, ‘Fukrey Returns’ – each of these fun filled laughter affairs has emerged as good success at the Box Office. Hence, now that ‘Welcome To New York’ is set to hit the screens, industry is hopeful that yet again audiences will give thumbs up to a comic affair.
“Of course, Judwaa 2 and Golmaal 3 were big ticket affairs. These films boasted of big starcast, big canvas, big budget and big presentation. They were catering to masses across A, B and C centers. While former hit a century, latter entered the 200 Crore Club. Then there was a major surprise success in the form of Fukrey Returns. It did double the business of what was expected out of it. For a small film like this to go past 80 crore mark was truly unbelievable. Clearly, audiences wanted their dose of laughs and gags,” a trade veteran comments.
This is the reason why now that 2018’s first comedy ‘Welcome To New York’ is arriving, one awaits the kind of fun that this Chakri Toleti directed film brings with it.
“The very premise is quite entertaining in fact,” an insider adds, “With Karan Johar and Riteish Deshmukh playing themselves and Sonakshi Sinha and Diljit Dosanjh joining them at the real life IIFA event, there are endless opportunities to bring on solid entertainment. This isn’t all as there is also a fictitious character in the film who is Karan Johar’s evil twin brother Arjun. Not just that, there are Lara Dutta and Boman Irani playing themselves as well along with Sushant Singh Rajput and Rana Daggubati in cameos.”
While Bollywood has been enjoying a good run with ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ [action thriller], ‘Padmaavat’ [historical drama] and ‘Padman’ [social drama] doing well, one now waits to see how does a rib tickling affair like Welcome To New York entice audience once it arrives on 23 February.
