‘Shaandaar’ has turned out to be one of the biggest commercial failures of 2015. There have been flops in the last 10 months but nothing really matches the kind of fall that the Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer took when compared to the opening day. If one looks at the biggest disaster of 2015, ‘Bombay Velvet’, it failed on the first day itself since there was no opening of any sorts. However, ‘Shaandaar’ has done the impossible by taking an opening of Rs. 130 million and then witnessing a free-fall with every passing day.
In fact such has been the all around rejection of the Vikas Bahl film that the entire first week’s collections are just the triple of the opening day, when usually it is about managing that over the weekend. What makes it further remarkable is the fact that these are eight day numbers with the first being a major festival holiday. Also, it was a solo release.
With just around Rs. 400 million to its name, the film is now almost out of theaters with a minimum number of shows in the running. The film will close under Rs. 450 million mark and would do lesser than not just Shahid’s last couple of releases ‘Haider’ and ‘R… Rajkumar’, but even ‘Kaminey’ that arrived many years back.
Meanwhile, ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ continued to score and brought in Rs. 140 million more in its second week. With over Rs. 530 million under its belt, the youth entertainer is moving towards the Rs. 600 million mark. This can well be termed as an established franchise now by Luv Ranjan and Abhishek Pathak, and could well be a surprise entrant in the Rs. 1 billion club once Part 3 arrives. Superhit.
