After more than a decade of waiting and much anticipation, finally ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ has hit the theatres today on December 16, 2022 in India and has already garnered massive response. The first instalment, ‘Avatar’, was released in 2009 and is still considered as the highest grosser till date.
But according to ETimes, we got to hear that several theatres in Tamil Nadu have refused to screen the sequel. ETimes has got in touch with a theatre owner in Chennai, Ruban Mathivanan, owner of GK Cinemas and he shared, “The distribution partner of ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ in Tamil Nadu has demanded a higher percentage of share for the film, which is drastically high compared to any other Hollywood film. We (GK Cinemas) decided to skip playing the film. I know a few other theatre owners who spent lakhs to upgrade theatres, including changing projectors, which cost about Rs. 1 Crore.”
Not only in Tamil Nadu, but several theatres in Andhra Pradesh and Telengana as well have refused to screen the James Cameron-directorial as the theatres owners claimed the same that the studio is asking for seventy percent share of revenue collections compared to the usual fifty percent revenue shares of Hollywood movies.
‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ is one of the most expensive films ever from Hollywood. It has made at a budget of $350 million as revealed by director James Cameron himself. In an interview previously, the director had claimed that the film has to collect more than $2 billion to break even.
