In the upcoming ‘Barbie’ film, Ryan Gosling is playing Ken, the iconic counterpart to Margot Robbie’s character, Barbie. However, it seems that Gosling had less options when it came to his costumes than Robbie did.
In an interview with Vogue UK, costume designer Jacqueline Durran revealed that Ken’s wardrobe was much more limited than Barbie’s, “No one cares about Ken, everybody just wants to play with Barbie”, she said. “He matches Barbie and changes too but he has very, very, many less options.”
Durran, who won an Oscar for her costume designs on Greta Gerwig’s ‘Little Women’ (2019) adaptation, said that colourful ’80s sportswear was the key to Ken’s looks in the movie. “It’s a very colorful palette”, she said. “It’s a very ’80s thing.”
The film ‘Barbie’ is set to release in theatres on July 21, 2023. Apart from Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, it also stars Will Farrell, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Connor Swindells, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon and Alexandra Shipp and is directed by Greta Gerwig.
