‘Major’ is a tribute to the 26/11 martyr Sandeep Unnikrishnan. It is his biopic and is narrated by his father. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was just 31 when he died fighting terrorists at the Taj Hotel, Mumbai in 2008.
Actor-filmmaker Adivi Sesh was fascinated by his story and hence came up with this movie. However, the movie is far from perfect. After watching a biopic such as ‘Shershaah’ (2021), the emotionally gripping factor seems missing in this film. There is a scene in the film where Sandeep’s love interest runs towards the bus in which he was leaving and kisses him which is something similar to that shown in ‘Shershaah’ but the high was missing in this movie maybe because we have seen a more emotional version of it.
The movie didn’t land well because the flow of the narrative wasn’t smooth. The movie doesn’t show Sandeep’s transformation from a civilian to an NSG commando. The scenes of the battle also feel very airbrushed.
The movie talks more about Sandeep’s personal life but his personal life is also not showcased with clarity. Overall the movie is a good watch and a very beautiful tribute to Sandeep Unnikrishnan but one would expect much more from a soldier’s biopic.
‘Major’ is currently streaming on Netflix India.
