Director James Cameron is currently on cloud nine as he re-released ‘Titanic’ (1997) worldwide on its twenty-fifth anniversary this year. Seems like the thrilling story of the doomed sailing luxury cruise ship is still very much in the public consciousness. ‘Titanic’ is the highest grossing film of all time and even after all these years, it’s arguably also the most loved film across the globe.
On this occasion of re-releasing the film in India, Cameron spoke to Bombay Times and in the interview, he shared that he absolutely loves Indian films, it’s stories, beauty and spectacles. Cameron shared that how the songs and dance numbers make Indian films strikingly different from western films, and that it’s quite fascinating to watch.
While recalling his meeting with S S Rajamouli at the Critics’ Choice Awards 2023, Cameron shared, “How much I enjoyed the physical production, the beauty and spectacle that he had created in his film ‘RRR’ (2022), but also the tension, the action and all the things that I like. That film made me think about the Indian film industry at large and how much I enjoy Indian films for those reasons, whether it is the emphasis on family, friendship, personal duty towards the people around you and all those things.”
James further shared that he started loving Indian films when he first visited India in 2010. He said that back then ‘Titanic’ did not have a major release in India, “because India was making so many of their own movies that you weren’t that interested in our films.”
Meanwhile, after the blockbuster box office collections of ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ (2022), James Cameron is currently super busy making ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’. The third part ‘Avatar 3’ will release in December 2024.
