After the sad demise of the “Nightingale of India” on 6th February 2022, the Maharashtra state government has declared a public holiday in the state on Monday, February 7, 2022, to mourn the demise of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar.
The Union Home Ministry announced that the national flag will fly at half-mast from February 6 to February 7 throughout India to mourn Lata Mangeshkar. The central government also announced that two-day mourning will be observed in her remembrance and no official entertainment will be held during this time.
The Chief executive officer of Breach Candy Hospital released a statement that, “She came and got admitted as a Covid patient. Covid was treated but due to post-covid complications she passed away”. Her family has decided to take her mortal remains to her home in Prabhu Kunj and then to Shivaji Park where her last rites will be conducted with full honours at 6.30 p.m. today.
Social media is flooded with fans and admirers grieving her death. It is a national loss for India as well as the end of an era. “I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people,” PM Modi wrote on Twitter.
