How Does Sultan Entertain and Inspire?

It could be Salman Khan’s biggest hit ever and it is still breaking records worldwide. What is the formula here?

1. Salman Khan

Salman Khan has made some career decision changes and is choosing good scripts over masala potboilers. After ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’, ‘Sultan’ again shows his emotional side as an actor in this sports drama cum love story. We have seen him doing well in romantic roles, comic roles and action entertainers. With ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and ‘Sultan’, we are seeing him playing roles with emotional quotient and giving justice to the characters ‘Pawan Kumar Chaturvedi’ and ‘Sultan Ali Khan’ in the films. He has matured as an actor.

2. The Director’s Vision

Ali Abbas Zafar entertains with commercial ingredients despite a nice storyline and we could feel some influence of Raj Kumar Hirani in this film. He has successfully helmed films like ‘Meri Brother Ki Dulhan’ and ‘Gunday’ earlier. This movie’s success will put him in the big league of filmmakers in Bollywood. He has been the first filmmaker who has made Salman Khan put so much efforts in his character of ‘Sultan Ali Khan’- in working on his physique to match the role of the wrestler and also in learning the Haryanvi dialect for the role. The efforts have paid rich dividends and there is no doubt this is Salman Khan’s career best performance as an actor.

3. The Element of Love

‘Sultan’ can be called more of a love story with sports as the background of the film. It is a well packaged film with the right commercial ingredients and a decent story. It entertains completely while delivering a social message. The influence from the film is very positive. The wrestling match scenes are very interesting and Indians enjoy their ‘dhobi pachad’. The entry scene of Salman Khan is awesome and was hooted with whistles in the theatre and the first wrestling fight scene gives a nice feeling about the film.

4. The Unusual Pairing

The pairing of Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma is fresh and is a cute desi love story. She has a strong role and has given a solid performance. She has also mouthed Haryanvi dialogues well. Her role is a strong pillar of the film. The pre-climax scene between Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma at the hospital is a beautiful scene between a husband and wife. The song “Jag Ghoomeya” summarizes their love story well in the film. There is one more scene pre-interval where Anushka questions Salman Khan that he has become arrogant after his success but he says that, it is not arrogance but self-confidence, which is another remarkable scene. Not to forget the turning point scene in the film, where Salman introduces Anushka to his friends and they call her ‘bhabhi’ which offends her. She tells him that he is worthless and what has he achieved and also slaps him. This scene changes his life to become a successful wrestler.

5. A Complete Entertainer with Minor Flaws

The film has good doses of humor. The wrestling scenes in the first half are excellent and not seen before in Indian cinema. The action scenes of mixed martial arts in the second half are simply brilliant and outstanding. Salman’s character in the second half is not shown as a normal hero as it is more inspiring. But the film could have been trimmed by 15 to 20 minutes easily. May be one song could have been removed and one fight scene also. The Olympic fight scene in the film could have been shown in a better way. Music is good and suits the tempo of the film. “Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai” is the party song of the year and his dance where he points at the bass is simply awesome.

‘Sultan’ entertains and inspires and is a Salman Khan show completely. He makes his presence felt with his strong emotional performance.
