‘Gladiator’ (2000) is one of the most critically acclaimed films of director Ridley Scott, which garnered immense appreciation from critics and the audiences as well. Now after waiting for more than two decades, it’s been officially confirmed that the director is coming back with a sequel of the epic drama.
Not only that, there’s another exciting news revealed by Deadline website that this time Ridley Scott has chosen Paul Mescal for the lead role, who is know for the romance drama ‘Normal People’ (2020). Russell Crowe, who played the lead role of Maximus in the first part, had collected more than $400 at the box office and also helped him win his first Oscar for Best Actor at the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.
According to reports, Paul Mescal will be playing the role of Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of the antagonist Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Mescal will be replacing Spencer Treat Clark, who played young Lucius in the first film.
As it’s know to all that ‘Gladiator’ ends with Maximus battling with Commodus man-to-man and fight till death with Commodus, who had murdered his family. ‘Gladiator’ had also won five Oscars including Best Picture in 2001.
The sequel ‘Gladiator 2’ will be also co-produced by Ridley Scott along with Michael Pruss, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher. The release date of the sequel is yet to be announced but it’s assumed that it could be out in early 2024.
