As predicted in this column last week, ‘Detective Byomkesh Bakshy’ took an opening of around 30%. This was decent enough as it gave the Sushant Singh Rajput starrer a chance to see a sustained run during the week. The reviews ranged from being decent to very good, which is a much better outcome for director Dibakar Banerjee after Shanghai that had fetched very mixed reviews. With the opening day to the tune of 4.2 crore, the Yash Raj production had decent collections on Saturday and Sunday as well, hence resulting in around 13 crore* coming in.
The film was challenged in a big way by Hollywood flick ‘Fast and Furious 7’ which took a head-start from Thursday itself, the day it hit the screens. The franchise has managed to build a loyal audience for itself over the years and this one just hit the roof. As a result, the extended weekend fetched the multi-starrer action affair around 50 crore, which is huge by all means. While it was predicted that the film would open to around 50% occupancy, the actual outcome was even better. It won’t be surprising if the film consolidates from this point on and even manages to become a 100 crore blockbuster success in India.
* Final numbers awaited
