Dinara Drukarova’s directorial debut ‘Woman At Sea’ has been selected to be played in the prestigious New Directors’ section at the San Sebastian Film Festival. Sold by Loco Films, ‘Woman At Sea’ is produced by Marianne Slot and Carine LeBlanc at Paris-based Slot Machine.
The movie has been entirely filmed in Iceland. It captures the struggle for integration, and the search for self and is riddled with freezing cold landscapes. This film is an adaptation of the novel of same name. Dinara Drukarova also features as an actor in the movie. Her character Lili is shown to have spent ten years of her life working on the boats in Alaska.
Talking about his connection with boats she said, “I’ve lived on a boat for more than 20 years. My children were born on the boat. The man I love already lived on the boat. I like living on a boat because it is about the idea of nomadism. Casting off. It’s so romantic. Living on a boat is like you live in a very big fish that is alive. The water gives you energy and calms you. When I’m upset, I look at the river and say, ‘This will pass like the river.’ You don’t have neighbors. So I can do parties until the morning. Still, the film was inspired by the book Woman at Sea”.
She further said that it blew her mind when she read the book and that’s how the project started. “For me, it was a metaphor, and a universal story of a human being that wants to abandon everything and go to the end of the world to find out who she is. I found the number of the author Catherine Poulain and met her. It was vital for me. It was something for me like I couldn’t live if I didn’t do it.”, said Dinara.
