Veteran music director Anu Malik celebrates his 60th birthday today. Having worked with all the top singers, producers, directors and lyricists in the Hindi film industry, the composer has a huge body of work. He has also worked with all the Khans – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan when he was at his peak.
One of the biggest strengths of Anu Malik is his versatility. No other music director in India has been so close to understanding the pulse of Hindi music after R. D. Burman. Malik’s understanding of instruments, orchestration, tunes, “ragas”, singing and writing makes him a full-fledged music director.
Melody has always been his forte and even today, music lovers continue to hum his romantic songs.
As a solo composer in Mohan Choti’s ‘Hunterwali 77’ (1977), one could already sense potential in Asha Bhosle’s “Zulmon Sitam Par Itrane Wale”. In the 80s, he worked with all the stalwarts of the industry such as Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar.
Despite all the ups and downs in his career, he never gave up. Today, his music remains popular across the world.
His latest devotional track under the Tips label, “Tera Shukr Shukr” by Babul Supriyo and written by Sameer Anjaan, is nearing 1 million views on YouTube. With a career spanning over four decades, this is a massive achievement.
He is married to Anju and they have two daughters, Anmol and Ada.
