She made her debut in a film which turned out to be the biggest hit of that year and since then, Sonakshi Sinha has shown her prowess as a performer in several films. In this interview, she talks about Kalank, striking a balance between doing different kind of films, ‘Dabangg 3’, her production house with brothers Luv and Kush and love for singing.
What was your first reaction when you heard the script of the film?
When Abhishek (Varman) first narrated the script to me, I thought it was a brilliant story. I was sure that this was a film I want to do. We hardly get to see these kinds of films being made in Hindi cinema these days. It is a wonderful relationship based drama which has several emotions like love, heartbreak and separation. The dynamics of the relationship that the characters share with each other is very interesting. What drew me most to the film was my character. She is a strong, sacrificing, loving, caring and nurturing person. Every character contributes equally towards taking the story forward.
On one hand, you are doing big, extravagant films like ‘Kalank’ and ‘Dabangg 3’ and on the other hand, you have also been a part of smaller films like ‘Noor’ and ‘Ittefaq’. Is there a conscious decision to strike a balance between two different kinds of cinematic worlds?
It is not a conscious attempt but I feel very happy about the fact that I have been able to strike this balance. Being a part of such diverse worlds is a great feeling. I am able to show my versatility as an actress. I am a very instinctive actor and enjoy doing all kinds of films. I say yes to a script only if I like it immediately.
You have started shooting for ‘Dabangg 3’. In the earlier films, you have not been a part of the title tracks but you will be seen shaking a leg in this one.
Yes, I am so happy that finally Rajjo gets to be included in the title track. Whether I will shake a leg in this song or not, that is something you will know when you see the song.
Do you wish you were a part of the song “Ghar More Pardesiya” along with Madhuri Dixit and Alia Bhatt?
They danced without me I am very upset about it (laughs). My character is not the kind who can indulge in any kind of dancing because of the circumstances she is in.
You had started a production house with your brothers Luv and Kush a couple of years back. What is happening on that front?
That is something my brothers are looking after. We have not announced any project as of now but hopefully, we will do something very soon.
You had released your single “Ishqoholic” a couple of years back. You also sung a song in ‘Happy Phirr Bhaag Jayegi’. Do you plan to release a single or sing in a film anytime soon?
I have recorded five-six tracks and kept them with me. I love singing and would love to sing more often. Hopefully, this year I will release another single.
There is a lot of mystery about the film you are doing with T-Series. Very little is known about the film.
We do not even know the name of the film. I think I should start a hashtag which reads ‘picture ka naam kya hai’. Perhaps, then the producers will feel pressurised to finalise a name for the film.
