Despite all the negative reviews that came the way of ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’, the film has managed to demonstrate decent hold at the box office, especially on the weekdays. There was patronage from the crowds in the interiors that ensures that between Monday and Thursday, the film collected over Rs. 10 crore (Rs. 100 million), hence bringing the film in the safe zone. As a result, the first week’s billing of the Mohit Suri directed film is over Rs. 27 crore (Rs. 270 million), which is better than what it had seemed till Saturday, before a reasonable jump on Sunday brought back smiles on the face of those involved with the film.
Of course a lot more was expected from the film due to the credentials involved. Ideally, a film like ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ should have looked at a lifetime total of over Rs. 50 crore (Rs. 500 million) at least. However, with the film primarily finding audience in the single screens, it would now reach till the Rs. 35 crore (Rs. 350 million). Since the film’s satellite and music rights have been sold for an impressive Rs. 22.5 crore (Rs. 225 million), the theatrical collections are decent enough to help the film sail through as the cost of production (including P&A) is controlled at Rs. 35 crore (Rs 350 million).
Meanwhile ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ had a decent second week and now stands at a little over Rs. 71 crore (Rs. 710 million). Again, a lot more was expected from the multi-starrer due to hype surrounding it as well as names involved. As of now, the film would stretch towards the Rs. 80 crore (Rs. 800 million) mark which is similar to Priyanka-Ranveer’s ‘Gunday’ (Rs. 78 crore – Rs. 780 million) and less than Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Zindagi Na Miledi Dobara’ (Rs. 90 crore – Rs. 900 million). Average.
‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ continues its victory ride, though for the first time since its release, the weekday collections went below the Rs. 1 crore (Rs. 10 million) mark on every passing day. Still, it continued to collect in the face of competition and now stands at a whopping Rs. 145 crore (Rs. 1.45 billion) The All Time Blockbuster is now heading towards the Rs. 150 crore (Rs. 1.5 billion) mark lifetime total. Remarkable.
