A dangerous and shocking wildfire ripped through the Maui Island in Hawaii on Tuesday night. Although the cause has not yet been determined, the government is trying to control the situation. It has already devastated the historic city of Lahaina. Dozens of citizens and tourists are still stuck there.
According to the US Forest Service, such wildfires are generally caused by humans. Natural calamities include lightning and volcanic activity. The Hawaiian Islands have six active volcanoes, including one in Maui. A few aerial pictures showed that some of the vibrant vision of colourful neighbourhoods and islands of the historical Lahaina turned into grey ashes.
According to the latest updates, the death toll has increased to 53. More than thirteen hundred people have been displaced and almost eleven thousand people have no power.
Jason Momoa, who is a native Hawaiian, has taken to his social media and expressed his sorrow to this ongoing wildfire. He urged for support and help from his fans and followers. “We are devastated and heartbroken for our friends and ‘ohana on Maui. Link in our bio for organisations that are helping”, Momoa wrote on Instagram.
The ‘Aquaman’ (2018) actor also reposted the photos from Āina Momona organisation, which explained the devastation to the internet. The statement read, “On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, a terrible combination of drought conditions and hurricane weather led to widespread wildfires across the island of Maui. Lahaina town is gone. Families were forced to evacuate on short notice, many escaping with only the clothes on their backs.”
Momoa shared details of a number of organisations like ActBlue Emergency Fundraiser for Maui Fire and the Hawai’i Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund, where people can donate and help. He also shared Kāko’o Haleakalā organisation’s account, @kakoo_haleakala, which is currently on a mission to rescue and preserve the lands of Hawaii.
