One of the legendary actors in Hollywood, who ruled the ‘70s and ‘80s, Raúl Rafael Carlos Juliá Arcelay aka Raul Julia was born on March 9, 1940 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Julia died at the age of 54 on October 24, 1994. So, let’s look over and remember his famous work on his 82nd birthday.
Raul had suffered from stomach cancer for three years and he underwent a surgery in early 1994. After his death, his body was transported to Puerto Rico and he received a state funeral, which was held in San Juan on October 27. The ceremony was attended by thousands of his fans and Puerto Rican citizens, as he was quite famous and his career was at its peak at that time.
Julia had given us quite a number of marvellous films in his life to remember him like ‘The Panic In Needle Park’ (1971), ‘Eyes Of Laura Mars’ (1978), ‘One From The Heart’ (1982), ‘The Morning After’ (1986), ‘Tequila Sunrise’ (1988), ‘Frankenstein Unbound’ (1990), ‘Havana’ (1990), ‘The Plague’ (1992), among others. He is still best known for his role as Gomez Addams in the famous film ‘The Addams Family’ (1991).
Apart from films, Raul had given numerous TV films too such as ‘Death Screen’ (1974), ‘Florida Straits’ (1986), ‘The Burning Season’ (1994) and many more.
Raul Julia had started his career by singing in clubs and hotels. Later he caught late actor-producer, Orson Bean’s attention and with his influence, Julia moved to New York city to work in the entertainment industry. Soon Raul gained interest in Broadway Theater and worked in the popular play ‘Your Own Thing’ adapted from William Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’ in 1968. Eventually Julia got noticed by producer Joseph Papp and achieved visibility by working with Meryl Streep in ‘Love Of Life’ TV soap-opera in 1978.
Julia had won several accolades for his spell-binding performances such as Tony Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Guild Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards and many more.
