The 69-year old legendary singer-composer passed away last night due to a chest infection. The doctor treating him stated, “Bappi Lahiri was suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea & recurrent chest infection. He was hospitalised in Criticare Hospital, Juhu for 29 days with this. He recovered well & was discharged home on Feb 15.”
He was well known for popularising disco music in the ’80s and ’90s. The disco King gave us chartbusters like “Chalte Chalte”, “Disco Dancer”, and “Sharaabi”. The unique fusion of Indian songs with western music was his signature style. He started his career with a Bengali cinema ‘Daadu’ (1974) where Late Lata Mangeshkar sang his composition. His first Hindi composition was “Tu Hi Mera Chanda” sung by Mukesh and the journey continued that he entered the Guinness Book of World Records for recording over 180 songs for 33 films in 1986.
After the death of Lata Mangeshkar, Bappi Da’s death is another blow to the Hindi film industry. Everyone from the industry and friends are sharing their condolences to the family and on social media.
‘I am a disco dancer’, ‘Mumbai se ayamera dost’, and many all-time favourites of every young generation, he created a difference with his desi disco and Indian melodies in Hindi film music. A noble talented master is no more but his music is with us. RIP BHAPPI DA”, wrote Subhash Ghai on Twitter.
He was last seen in the reality show Big Boss 15 this year. The family released an official statement:
“It’s a deeply sad moment for us. Our beloved Bappi Da has left for heavenly abode last midnight. The cremation will take on arrival of Bappa From LA tomorrow mid morning, We are seeking love and blessings for his soul. We will keep you updated.
