There are many classic family drama films in Bollywood, which remain memorable and ever green even after decades have passed such as ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ)’ (1995), ‘Hum Saath – Saath Hai’ (1999) and many more. Same goes with ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (K3G)’ (2001) as well. The film clocks twenty years of its release this year. Directed by Karan Johar and produced by Karan Johar’s father, Yash Johar of Dharma Productions, the film starred the most celebrated stars in Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor Khan. Even after two decades, ‘K3G’ has a special place in our hearts and we can still watch the film again and again as it did not lose its charisma till now.
The story of ‘K3G’ revolves around an Indian joint family, which faces troubles and misunderstandings over their adopted elder son, Rahul Raichand’s (Shah Rukh Khan) marriage to a girl named Anjali Sharma (Kajol), who belongs to a lower socio-economic group and then it shows how the younger ones of the family, Rohan Raichand (Hrithik Roshan) and Pooja Sharma (Kareena Kapoor Khan) show maturity and make the older ones in the family Yashvardhan Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) and Nandini Raichand (Jaya Bachchan) understand the importance of their elder son and the gravity and worth of a joint family.
‘K3G’ was a blockbuster hit and emerged as commercially successful, both domestically and internationally and became the highest grossing film worldwide with a budget of Rs 400 million of that time. The film won several prestigious accolades such as Filmfare Awards, IIFA Awards, Screen Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Bollywood Movie Awards and many more.
The most remarkable thing of ‘K3G’ is the songs, which are still our favourites and the soundtrack is still cherished by us and make us feel the essence of family love. The music album was composed by Jatin-Lalit, Sandesh Shandaliya and Adarsh Shrivastava, lyrics penned by Sameer and Anil Pandey. The film has a total of eight songs in it and all were presented by Sony Music. The songs are “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham title track”, “Bole Chudiya”, “You Are My Soniya”, “Suraj Hua Maddham”, “Say Shava Shava”, “Ye Ladka Haye Allah”, “Deewana Hai Dekho” and “Vande Mataram”.
All the evergreen songs are sung by legendary singers in Bollywood such as Lata Mangeshkar, Kavita K. Subramaniam, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Amit Kumar, Sunidhi Chauhan and Sudesh Bhonsle. Even the song “Say Shava Shava” was sung by Amitabh Bachchan himself. All the songs have a special aura individually as it has pop music, romance, bhangra, party anthem, a total mixture of diversity.
Remembering the film, director Karan Johar posted a video clip from the film on his Twitter and says he can still feel the euphoria of the film’s release on big screen.

Even the choreographer of ‘K3G’, Farah Khan Kunder also posted a reel video on Instagram, where we can see her and Karan Johar dancing on the song “Bole Chudiya” and showing dramatic dance moves and poses and celebrating twenty years of the film’s release.
