Director Rajkumar Hirani must be applauded for selecting a story based on the controversial life of Sanjay Dutt and overall, it is a good biopic. Ranbir Kapoor delivers an award-winning performance and is outstanding. He imitates Sanjay Dutt’s body language with perfection. Paresh Rawal stands out as Sanjay Dutt’s father. Vicky Kaushal, who portrays Sanjay Dutt’s friend, performs brilliantly. The film fails in providing enough entertainment, comedic scenes and an emotional connect. The story written by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi is not strong enough for a biopic. Screenplay (Abhijat Joshi) could have been better and the dialogues are just functional. In certain scenes, the double meaning dialogues may not go well with the female audience. In the first half, the drug phase has been stretched like a rubber. Editing (Rajkumar Irani) is not up to the mark. In the second half, too many flashbacks are likely to confuse the viewers. The pace of the film dips too often. A lot of information which is known to the public, is not shown; such as his first and second marriage and his relationship with Madhuri Dixit. The female star cast namely Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Dia Mirza (Manyata Dutt), Manisha Koirala (Nargis Dutt), Anushka Sharma and Boman Irani’s characters are all ill-defined and they disappoint with their performances. Music is lacklustre. The film lacks repeat value and doesn’t have mass appeal and only a certain class of the audience will patronise it.
