In recent times, there has been an influx of films based in Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state in India, which remains in news for all the right and wrong reasons. As evident in films like ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’, ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, the colourful cultural topography of the state serves as a good backdrop and narrative device to tell stories that engage the viewers. ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari (‘Nil Battey Sannata’) and co-written by Nitesh Tiwari (director, ‘Dangal’) is the latest film to join the list of films made in the state.
The film tells the story of Bitti, a feisty young woman who does not adhere to the norms set by the patriarchal society she has grown up in. She has no inhibitions and drinks and consumes alcohol on the sly. Though she has many suitors, nobody is willing to accept her for what she is. They do not approve of her free-spirited nature. Bitti comes across a book called ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi’, which is about a woman that seems to resemble her as far as character traits are concerned. She hunts down Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana) the owner of the printing press that published the book and urges him to help her meet Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao), the writer of the book.
The two minutes and fifty seconds long trailer introduces one to the major plot points in the film. One wonders if it would have been better had they concealed a few of them and let the audience discover a few things when they came to the theatres to watch the film. Keeping that thought aside, what one can confidently assert is that the trailer is engaging enough for one to expect an entertaining film steeped in humour, drama and romance.
Ayushmann Khurrana and Rajkummar Rao have proved their mettle over the last couple of years by delivering a string of powerful perormances in a variety of films. Despite being a part of big-budgeted films and delivering respectable performances in them, Kriti Sanon remains quite underrated and her talent remains unexplored. However, going by the trailer, one is hopeful that this film will do the trick for her and implore the audience to discover that, besides being a stunner, she is a fine actress.
