Taapsee Pannu has been a bundle of talent and energy in this generation of actors. The actress turned 33 on the 1st of August. Her choice of films in the Hindi film industry has been absolute gems. The audience gets to see her versatility in her body of work. She has done Hindi masala films like ‘Chashme Badoor’ (2013) and ‘Judwaa 2’ (2017) directed by David Dhawan. She started her career with regional cinema in the Telugu film ‘Jhummandi Naadam’ in 2010 and has done films in all south Indian languages and is even a successful star there.
Films like ‘Baby’ (2015), ‘Pink’ (2016), ‘The Ghazi Attack’ (2017), ‘Naam Shabana’ (2017), ‘Soorma’ (2018), ‘Mulk’ (2018), ‘Manmarziyan’ (2018), ‘Badla’ (2019), ‘Saandh Ki Aankh’ (2019), ‘Mission Mangal’ (2019) and ‘Thappad’ (2020) are all out of the box scripts.
Most of the films have been heroine-based and her roles have been diversified, including women empowering characters. For filmmakers today, she is the one of best choices for roles with strong women characters.
In a short career, she has played a spy, lawyer, scientist, sportsperson, and homemaker. We have seen her in the much older character of ‘Prakash Tomar’ in ‘Saandh Ki Aankh’. She does not come from a film background but has created a niche for herself. Today with her choices as an actor, she is a brand in herself. We associate her with strong women characters in her films. In between, she surprises with a negative character like in ‘Badla’ (2019).
Taapsee Pannu has worked with some of the top film makers in the country like David Dhawan, Neeraj Pandey, Anubhav Sinha, Sujoy Ghosh and Anurag Kashyap. She has worked with actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Varun Dhawan, Bhumi Pednekar, Abhishek Bachchan, Vicky Kaushal, Amrita Singh and Rishi Kapoor. In recent years, she has been getting much better roles and filmmakers to work with.
The grading of actresses on the basis of working with Yash Raj Films or Dharma Productions does not make sense today as the audience is changing. We want all kinds of films and actors are constantly challenging themselves in doing diversified roles. Nowadays, films like ‘Pink’, ‘Badla’ and ‘Saandh Ki Aankh’ also got good box office success. It is an illusion to think only films with big stars get acceptance. The small films with good stories and strong performances are changing the game. Similarly, big stars have also starting doing diverse roles and different kinds of films.
In an interview to CNN-News18, Taapsee said, “I did lose films to star kids. I’ve been replaced unprofessionally in the films I had spoken about. There are two ways – either you depend on the biggies to support you consistently and help you reach the position that you eventually want to, or you make one for yourself regardless of anyone supporting you or not. I decided to depend on myself. I choose to be ‘atmanirbhar’ (self dependent). I made sure I got the kind of films I wanted to do and the path of my own. It might take longer but I will have my own journey. I have no regrets.”
Taapsee Pannu and the courageous Kangana Ranaut have been in loggerheads as they are constantly compared to each other. The latter called her a B-Grade actress. They are both outsiders and have similar journeys in their careers. Today both have created a niche for themselves in the industry. They are like the heroes of their own films and play strong women characters. The choices of films have taken their careers forward and they have always taken risks boldly. Both have strong and fearless personalities with opinions on most subjects. It would have been preferred they talked to each other rather than have these silly social media fights.
We all know today Taapsee Pannu is an A-list actress alongside Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut and Bhumi Pednekar in the Hindi film industry. At the moment, she is completely occupied with ‘Krrish 4’, ‘Haseen Dillruba’, ‘Rashmi Rocket’ and ‘Shabaash Mithu’. In between, we also expect her to do a few masala entertainers for the mass audience.
