John Lennon was the lead vocalist of the famous English rock band ‘The Beatles’, which was formed in Liverpool in 1960. Apart from Lennon, it had three other members, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. ‘The Beatles’ is the most influential rock band ever till now even after sixty years. The band was active from 1960 to 1970. It has all the flavours of ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s music beats, rock and roll, classical music elements and traditional pop music. The members later on explored many other varieties of music styles such as ballads, Indian music, psychedelia and hard rock.
On December 8, John Lennon had his 41st death anniversary. He was assassinated at the age of 40 in 1980 by Mark David Chapman and he was been charged with his murder two days later. Lennon was shot dead outside his house at Dakota building in New York. His death came out as a shock to people and his fans. Mark David Chapman said in an interview later that he feels more and more shame every year passes for his deeds.
So, what was the reason behind the murder? After being arrested and charged for Lennon’s murder, Chapman said he was infuriated by John Lennon’s lavish lifestyle and was being provoked by one of Lennon’s comments in 1966 that, “The Beatles is more popular than Jesus”. Mark David Chapman was also a big fan of ‘The Beatles’ himself.
How did he plan the assassination? Chapman was waiting for Lennon to come outside of his house and Lennon gave an autograph on his copy of the album Double Fantasy to Chapman and left for a recording session. Later at night, when Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono returned to their house Dakota building, Chapman fired five hollow-point bullets from a .38 revolver and four of them hit Lennon’s back. After that Chapman remained standing there till the police came. Lennon was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, where he was declared dead.
